18K French Victorian Diamond & Bristol Blue Guilloche Initial M Locket

$3,895

A remarkable French Victorian c.1860-1880 bristol blue guilloche and diamond initial 'M' locket, modelled in 18k gold and hallmarked.

The locket is exquisitely crafted with an initial 'M', set with glistening rose cut diamonds approx. 0.63ctw by spread.

The initial is set atop a bristol blue guilloche bevelled glass slice, with a guilloche pattern carved from the gold beneath. The see through effect of the glass allows the guilloche pattern beneath to be seen.

This is a very unique piece, as it is commonly blue enamel that is atop of the guilloche pattern; We believe this to be a specially commissioned piece of the time, as we have never seen another example like it before. It is often onyx that is used, but as onyx is opaque, the original owner who likely commissioned this piece must have wanted to combine the elements of a raised bezel effect with a blue enamel guilloche look, resulting in the special creation of this one of a kind piece, which is just lovely! In addition, the bristol blue glass makes it more durable as opposed to blue enamel, as it would not be subjected to enamel wear and tear over time.

Surrounding the bristol blue guilloche are intricate rope detailing around the border, alternated with luscious and shiny pearls, which adds another layer of dimension to the piece. The pearls are all present and in excellent condition.

The back of the locket opens up and reveals another interior original glass door in the middle. This can be used to store precious mementos like a photograph, or even a flower petal. It opens and closes well.

It is hallmarked with the French eagle head hallmark on both the jump ring and side of the bail for 18k gold.

This locket is offered in excellent condition with no cracks or wear to the bristol blue guilloche plate.

The initial 'M' was originally set with pearls, some of which were missing and/or damaged, we have thus replaced the initial with bright and sparkling rose cut diamonds that has truly enhanced the look of the locket. The glistening effect of the diamonds play well with the guilloche in movement, creating a truly special effect.

It measures 26.4mm x 50.9mm with bail, 26.4mm x 38.2mm without bail, and weighs 18.14 grams.

The locket is a wonderful and one of a kind, unique piece that is heirloom worthy and would make an exceptional addition to any antique jewellery lover's collection.
