18K French Victorian Diamond Cherub, Dove & Anvil Enamel Pocket Watch

A remarkable and one of a kind French Victorian c.1890-1900 diamond cherub, dove & anvil enamel pocket watch, modelled in 18k gold and hallmarked.

The pocket watch holds a hidden symbolism with its design. It features a lovely and sweet design of a cherub with an anvil at work (Anvil representing the Greek god Hephaestus, god of smiths and volcanoes), with two doves by it's side (Doves representing the sacred symbol of the Greek goddess Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty).

There is a rose cut diamond on its anvil, resembling a 'flaming heart', and further rose cut diamonds blending amongst the foliage and foliate at the bottom. As Aphrodite was married to Hephaestus, it can be seen that he is forging a flaming heart for her which represents his burning love for her. Hephaestus is also known for making the armour for the gods, including the winged helmet and sandals for Hermes, and shield and breastplate for Achilles.

This pocket watch was likely given as a token of love from a loved one to another.

There are approx. 0.30ctw by spread of sparkling rose cut diamonds.

It is hallmarked with the French eagle head assay mark for 18k gold on the inner case of the pocket watch. It is in running and working condition.

The watch measures 29mm across, and weighs 21.66 grams.

A must-have for any watch collector, and especially cherub lovers, this pocket watch is a true treasure offered in great condition with no wear to the enamel.
