18K French Victorian Diamond Floral Crescent Brooch

$4,665
Item Details

An outstanding French Victorian c.1890-1900 diamond floral crescent brooch, crafted in 18k gold and hallmarked.

It is set with chunky rose cut diamonds, approx. 3.35ctw by spread. The diamonds are all of excellent quality and are open-backed to allow for more light to pass through for an even brighter sparkle. It is notable to mention that some of the rose cut diamonds are also in a unique trillion (triangle) cut shape, with the setting specially set to fit each diamond, crafted to exceptional standards. The side of the crescent features a lovely pierced gallery carved by hand.

It is such a special design, also known as the 'Honeymoon' brooch. The flower representing the 'honey' with its nectar, and the crescent for the 'moon'. As its name denotes, it would have traditionally been given from a groom to his bride as a betrothal gift during engagement. As the piece is crafted entirely in 18k solid gold, this must have been specially commissioned to a highly esteemed family of the time.

It is hallmarked with French owl hallmark and maker's marks on the brooch pin and catch for 18k gold. The brooch opens and closes well and comes with all original stones and components. This would be a wonderful and special addition to any crescent lovers collection.

This is a very fine and rare example of a Victorian floral honeymoon crescent brooch and is in pristine excellent condition.

The crescent measures 38mm across, and weighs 10.41 grams.
