18K & Platinum Edwardian Diamond Monogram LL & Date Brooch c.1910

$850

A wonderful French Edwardian roman numeral date brooch, exquisitely crafted and rich in symbolism. Dated for c.1910, it bears "MCMX" on the left, which translates to 1910, and "XVIII" on the right, which translates to 18.

The number 18 marks the 18th day of the year 1910. Perhaps a wedding, a birth, or another milestone dearly remembered. It may also hold its own symbolism, with the number 18 associated with themes of life, luck, and cherished new beginnings.

This is without doubt a special custom commission, quite possibly created to mark a significant anniversary year or a moment of deep personal importance. At its heart rests a striking double "LL" cypher monogram, lending an air of aristocratic elegance.

The intertwined double “L” at the heart of this brooch echoes the celebrated royal cypher of King Louis XIV of France (4th picture in gallery). Known as the Sun King, Louis XIV famously entwined two “L”s to create his regal monogram; A motif that remains emblazoned across the Palace of Versailles, from gilded gates (5th picture in gallery) to carved stonework (6th picture in gallery). This enduring emblem became a symbol of French grandeur and artistry, instantly evoking an air of courtly elegance.

Set in 18k gold and platinum, the brooch carries both the French eagle head hallmark for 18k gold and the dog head hallmark for platinum, each found on the reverse of the brooch and on the brooch pin.

Delicate milgrain work traces the edges of the monogram’s letters, catching the light in the gentlest glimmer. Tiny rose cut diamonds, open‑backed for brilliance, are arranged across the brooch in a total weight of 0.59ctw by spread. All stones are original and present with no missing stones.

It can be worn as a pendant or watch chain extender as shown modelled in the picture gallery.

It measures 35mm x 19mm height, and weighs 6.45 grams.

Whether as a gift for a loved one or a cherished addition to a collection, this brooch is a miniature time capsule. A jewel that carries not only the sparkle of its stones, but the romance of its history.
