18K & Silver Victorian Diamond, Ruby & Pearl Enamel Lover's Knot Vinaigrette Locket with Star Bail
A beautiful Victorian c.1870-1890 lover's knot vinaigrette locket with a star bail, modelled in 18k gold & silver, with beautiful rose cut diamonds and cabochon rubies and pearls. It is love at first sight with this locket!
This locket is remarkably special as it has deep symbolism of love throughout the piece, where the Victorians were known to use the symbolism of stones and motifs to convey their hidden message to their intended recipient.
It features a lover's knot motif; A symbol of love in the Victorian era perfectly represented in jewellery, with interwoven design that signifies two lovers entwined together in love for eternity. There are also more symbolisms of love throughout the entire piece. The star bail is especially unique, with a star set with diamonds, representing, "You are the star in my heart, a guiding light so bright". The cabochon rubies represents love and passion. The lovely pearls represents purity, unadulterated love in its purest form. This was very likely a specially comissioned piece as we have never seen a repeated design of this piece in our years of collecting.
It is complemented with black enamel on the edges of the lover's knot, the black enamel is all intact and is just gorgeous! There are approx. 0.95ct of diamonds by spread, 0.90ct rubies, with a total weight of 1.85ctw.
This gorgeous locket is sourced from France. It is hallmarked with the French owl head hallmark on the bail, as well as on the inner locket located on the inside of the locket at the bottom edge near the hinge. All stones are original and present with no missing stones.
The sides of the locket is beautifully engraved, and the intricate pierced design on the back is all hand carved, featuring pierced filigree design resembling that of vines and fleur de lis flower patterns. The exquisite and fine attention to detail best represents the expert antique craftsmanship of the jeweller that made this heirloom locket.
It opens up to reveal a vinaigrette locket compartment. You may put a perfumed scented cloth inside it, or to store your precious mementos and photo within. The vinaigrette window provides a perfumed scent to sift through the pierced columns, or conversely, a picture would have a peek-through effect while providing discreet privacy of the photo.
This is truly one of the best lockets we've had the pleasure to encounter. It is remarkable in all areas of symbolism, design, quality, construction, and uniqueness and is certainly an excellent heirloom worthy piece, offered in fantastic condition.
