14K Austrian-Hungarian Victorian Diamond & Black Enamel Heart Locket
A stunning Austrian-Hungarian Victorian c.1870-1880 heart locket modelled in 14k gold and fully hallmarked.
It is set with lovely collet set rose cut diamonds approx. 3.06ctw by spread, with a stunning and unique pear shaped rose cut diamond that resembles a 'dagger', complete with a diamond on the bail on the top. It is certainly an edgier heart locket with a lot of character!
The diamonds are closed back and foiled. The foils are clear and bright with no damage to the foils, and the diamonds are in great condition with a gorgeous sparkle.
There is a starburst or flame decorated with black enamel surrounding the center diamond which also resembles a smaller heart. This could be interpreted as a 'flaming heart' as well, which is such a unique and special design!
The reverse contains a locket with a glass panel that can be used to store precious mementos or a picture. On the side of the panel, it is hallmarked with the Austro-Hungarian hallmark of a 'fox facing left with the number 4' for 14k gold, as well as a city assay mark "A" for Vienna.
It measures 24mm x 42mm with bail, 24mm x 33.7mm without bail, and weighs 11.32 grams.
This is a wonderful locket that is presented in excellent condition. It is always a delight to come across Austrian-Hungarian pieces as the Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy empire was only from 1867 to 1918.
Note: Please note that as the diamonds are foiled, it is advisable that the piece does not get wet or exposed to water. It can be gently cleaned by wiping it down with a wrung out damp cloth.
