14K European Georgian Engraved Envelope Hidden Compartment Poison Ring

$2,645
Item Details

A beautiful and rare European Georgian c.1820-1830 poison ring, modelled in 14k gold and hallmarked.

The ring has detailed hand engravings of floral work on the central plaque in the shape of an envelope. The panel lifts up to reveal two doors, and a locket opening which can be used to store a precious photo or painting inside. It opens and closes well with a satisfying click.

This secret hidden compartment gives this ring its name 'poison ring', an important and rare part of history.

It is hallmarked with several hallmarks. The first hallmark is on the right side of the outer band, a Dutch boar hallmark that is the duty import mark of c.1831-1893. This means that this item was imported into the Netherlands in the early 19th century, likely European in origin. The second hallmark is a maker's mark on the inner right side of the band. The third hallmark is '14P' on the outer center of the band, which is for 14k gold, and the 'P' stands for "Plumb", that certifies that there is at least 14k (585/1000) gold in the ring.

The locket compartment measures 9.6mm x 8.3mm height, and weighs 1.36 grams. It is offered in excellent condition, and a true rarity considering its age of almost 200 years old.

The ring would look lovely worn on its own or complemented with other rings for a varied look.

It is a US 10.25 and sizable down to a maximum of 2.25 sizes, to a US 8. It is not reccomended to size it up from its current size.
