18K & Silver Georgian/Victorian Diamond & Pearl Cherub Enamel Pocket Watch with Brooch

A stunning and exceptional, rare late Georgian to early French Victorian c.1830-1840 fusee pocket watch crafted in 18k gold and silver, and hallmarked.

What is unique about this watch is that it features a complete painted enamel portrait scene of three cherubs covering the entire watch. Most cherub watches would typically only feature a cherub head, or a on small section of the watch - which certainly makes this watch very desirable!

The enamel is all original and in pristine condition. It is set with rose cut diamonds approx. 1.65ctw by spread. The diamonds are beautifully framed around the pocket watch in an entwined vine design, on the bow bail as well as on the brooch.

It comes with its original diamond and pearl brooch pin that is hallmarked with the French eagle head for 18k gold, as well as maker's marks. The brooch pin is detachable, which allows the watch to be worn as a pendant-watch with it's diamond and pearl bow bail - such a versatile piece!

The fusee movement watch was the predecessor to the movements used in mid 19th century pocket watches, as it was used as early as in the 1600s. It uses a key to wind, but unlike other watches which wind clockwise, the fusee watch winds anti-clockwise. The verge escapement used in fusee movement watches were later replaced to escapements (cylinder and lever) in the 1850s.

At a time when pocket watches were not really reliable as time instruments, they were seen more as items of class and esteem for the wealthy and affluent.

The watch measures 35mm across, 49.5mm height including the bow bail, and weighs 31.84 grams. The brooch measures 35.9mm across, and weighs 2.34 grams.

It is in running and working condition, and is offered in its excellent pristine form. This watch would be a valuable addition to any jewellery lover's collection.

Note: As this is a fusee movement watch, it is important to note that when winding the watch, the key must turn anti-clockwise, and not clockwise.
