14K Dutch Victorian Onyx & Pearl Initial S Locket-Brooch c.1875 (With Provenance)
A superb and exquisite, rare Dutch Victorian c.1875 initial "S" locket-brooch, crafted in 14k gold and hallmarked.
A meticulous hand-worked granulated cannetille beadwork frames a center onyx, with an initial "S", set with luscious pearls in a gothic font, complete with a bow on top. It is followed by a border of pearls on the bottom, with dangling tassels that completes the look. The bow on top allows a fine chain to be threaded through to be worn as a locket pendant.
One may be further surprised by the back, which is just as detailed as the front; As it reveals a glass locket with a painted sepia miniature of a touching memorial scene, with a weeping willow tree and a headstone spelling out “J.T. Prumers”.
Further research reveals this to be Johannes Tobias Prumers from Ellewoutsdijk, the Netherlands, born on 17 December 1808. He was married to Ariaantje Stolk, and together they had 14 children. He worked his way up from office clerk, to town clerk, to a public notary and finally, he was the Mayor (Burgemeester) from 1851, and he died on 20 May 1875. It is then presumed that the initial “S” on the locket-brooch would belong to his wife’s last name initial “Stolk”, and this is a special remembrance piece.
