18K French Victorian Onyx Double Face Cameo Locket

A really unique French Victorian c.1870-1880 double face cameo locket, carved from onyx and crafted in 18k gold, hallmarked.

It features a cameo of two side facing soldiers in black and white, hand carved from onyx. These are usually found in rings and we have never come across another double face cameo in locket form, making this a very unique and rare piece!

The cameos are expertly carved with lifelike expressions to the portraits, and is a very fine and high quality piece.

The cameo is set on a locket that is in the shape of a book, hanging from an ornate gold frame and lovely bail with intricate details. The locket opens up to reveal an inner compartment with its original glass and bezel frame. It opens and closes well.

It is hallmarked with the French eagle head for 18k gold on the reverse of the bail and is in excellent condition.

It measures 21mm x 45mm with bail, 21mm x 35mm without bail, and weighs 12.69 grams.
