18K French Victorian Cherub & Dove Blue Guilloche Enamel Pearl Locket

$5,250

An exceptional French Victorian c.1840-1860 cherub and dove, blue guilloche and pearl locket modelled in 18k gold and hallmarked.

It features a serene and tender scene of a cherub meticulously painted with great detail, gently accompanied by a dove. The cherub echoing the classical form of Eros, later softened into a symbol of innocence and the soul. The dove reflects both divine peace and its ancient association with Aphrodite, embodying love, purity, and quiet spiritual grace.

Both the front and back of the locket has the most gorgeous deep blue guilloche enamel that seems to come alive with movement, and it is offered in excellent condition with no wear to the enamel. It is further accented with luscious pearls all around, both on the front and back as well.

It is incredibly rare for a piece to be enamelled on the reverse as well, as such detailing was often reserved only for the visible face, making this a testament to the maker’s dedication to beauty, detail, and craftsmanship.

The interior of the locket can be used to store a photograph or precious mementos. It originally housed a fusee watch movement which was no longer in running condition, and we have removed it so that it can be used and preserved as a locket. We will include the original movement it came along with for further safekeeping.

The locket can be opened by pressing the latch release button on the top of the crown firmly. To close the locket, simply snap it back shut. It opens and closes smoothly.

It is hallmarked with the French eagle head hallmark on the reverse side of the bow, right where you would slide a chain through.

This is a quality heirloom worthy piece that is offered in excellent and exquisite condition. It would be a great addition to any jewellery enthusiast’s collection.

It measures 30mm x 40mm with bail, 30mm x 30mm without bail and weighs 7.71 grams.

Note: Any marks seen on the pictures are from reflection & dust particles taken during photography. The locket is in great condition and the enamel is all intact.

The necklace shown is for display purposes only and is not included in the listing.
