Sold on Layaway | 18K French Victorian Diamond Monogram AM/MA or MV/VM Brooch-Pendant (With Detachable Brooch Pin)

An outstanding French c.1870-1880 monogram "AM/MA" or "MV/VM" brooch-pendant set with rose cut diamonds and crafted in 18k gold, hallmarked.

The brooch-pendant features an intricate design of the monogram, with one initial set with sparkly rose cut diamonds approx. 1.00ctw by spread. The other initial perfectly complements it with a hand-etched engraving in gold to give it realistic detail.

The very special feature about this piece is that the brooch pin is detachable. A hidden bail has been expertly added at the back in 18k gold so that the brooch can also be worn as a pendant with the brooch pin detached, making it a versatile and convertible two-way piece.

The other important feature to note is that it also retains its original watch pin hook at the bottom. This would have originally allowed a pocket watch to be attached at the bottom, allowing the piece to be worn as a pocket watch brooch pin. You can also choose to add your own dangling charms at the bottom with the hook. The other function in retaining the original watch pin hook, is that it also acts as a second hidden bail. This allows the monogram to be worn as "MV/VM" by threading a chain through it. (See the last video in the picture gallery for an example)

It is hallmarked with French eagle head for 18k gold on the brooch pin and catch.

The brooch pin opens and closes well. It is very rare to come across an original antique piece that retains its original detachable brooch pin, which also double functions as a pendant. It is a wonderful example of expert French craftsmanship of the Victorian era.

It measures 27.4mm x 31.3mm height, and weighs 10.58 grams.

Note: Due to the detachable brooch pin nature of the piece, it is normal for the brooch pin to sway slightly as the brooch pin cannot be screwed on too tightly as it might damage the screws. This does not impede its function as a brooch.
