18K French Victorian Onyx Monogram GM/MG Locket c.1868

A gorgeous French Victorian c.1868 onyx and black enamel locket, with the monogram "GM" or "MG", modelled in 18k gold and hallmarked.

The locket is beautifully crafted with two onyx pieces in the middle section, on the front and back of the locket. The curved edges of the locket are framed in black enamel. It is hallmarked with the French eagle head hallmark for 18k gold on the jump ring near the bail.

The monogram "GM" or "MG" is beautifully hand carved from gold in 3D relief, giving a beautiful dimension to the piece with artistic touches of leaves and foliate artwork.

The interior of the locket opens up and reveals two glass doors. As most French lockets usually only have one glass door, this locket with two glass doors makes it a very special piece, where two photographs can be placed on the left and right side of the locket.

There is also a nice little surprise on the inside of the locket, upon closer inspection, the side of the inner frame of the locket reveals an original date engraving, "2 Octobre 1868" in French, translated to 2 October 1868.

It opens and closes well and is in good condition.

It measures 24mm x 42mm with bail, 24mm x 30mm without bail, and weighs 14.23 grams.

This is an important and precious piece of French history expertly crafted and offered in excellent and collectible condition, and would make a wonderful heirloom treasure.

Note: Any marks seen are dust particles and reflection from photography. The onyx and enamel is in excellent condition.
