18K & Silver French Victorian Diamond Crescent Brooch

A breathtaking French Victorian c.1880-1890 diamond crescent brooch, modelled in 18k gold & silver, hallmarked.

It is a huge 45mm across, a very rare extra jumbo size. The crescent design has unique Celtic braid swirls, resembling entwining snakes. It is set with rose cut diamonds approx. 3.95ctw by spread.

It is hallmarked with the French eagle head hallmark on both the pin and clasps.

This brooch has a very unique feature in that both the brooch pin and the C clasp are detachable. They have an in-built screw system which allows the parts to be detached. This might have been part of a larger jewellery suite, with the crescent being a component for a tiara, bangle, or hair pin.

It is in beautiful and excellent condition, and weighs 16.88 grams.
